Do Beauty and English Communication Skill Go Together?

The Philippines’ obsession with international beauty pageants probably began in the 1960’s. Since then, the Philippines has followed beauty pageants as wildly and passionately as some nations follow popular sports leagues. Crowns encourage many young Filipino women to dream of becoming a beauty queen.

A year ago, Miss Pia Wurtzbach was crowned Miss Universe 2015. After the victory, an obsession has been with her who is part-Filipino and part-German. The 5’8 beauty speaks Filipino, German and English language.

The Philippines took center stage in the international beauty contest scene as it hosted the 2016 Miss Universe pageant. Miss Philippines, or Miss Maxine Medina, was the talk of the town too. She was criticized allegedly for having poor English skills.

Some beauty pageant experts suggested that she should have had an interpreter for the pageant’s question-and-answer section. One of the beauty pageant experts said, “Using Filipino doesn’t make her less of a beauty queen.” Another beauty pageant expert said, “No, you don’t need an interpreter, because the Philippines is actually an English-speaking country.”

In the end, Miss Philippines was not able to make it into top 3 candidates in the final coronation. Some people felt that she failed because of her answers in the question-and-answer section.

In my opinion, in this kind of internationally-known beauty pageant where people from all around the world are watching and gauging the answers given by contestants, they should answer the questions in English.

So, that brings to the question: do beauty and English communication skill go together? Tell me what you think.
